Why is Cable Still a Thing?

Why do people still pay for cable? I admit I am rather distant from that choice at this point. I've lived out of town for almost eight years now. We couldn't get internet, let alone cable, up until about a year ago. Before that, when I lived in town, my roommates and I were to cheap to pay for it. And before that, my parents didn't think we needed it. So yes, I understand that I have a different view on the topic than those of you who have always had it.
Here is what I don't get. Cable is fairly expensive. Not only is cable pricey, but there are just as many commercials as there is actual show time. And on top of that, most of the shows are junk (no offense to those who were involved in their creation, I respect what you do, keep trying). Try not watching them for a decade, you will wonder why you ever thought they were good. So...you pay a lot for shows that aren't that great that get interrupted all the time by even worse commercials. I won't even get into the time wasted flipping through channels looking for something good. If you are happy, don't let me change your course. As for me, every time I stay at a hotel I am reminded of how glad I am I don't have cable.
